Helena Cohen

For over fifteen years, I've been running a successful private practice specializing in mental health and trauma recovery.

Prior to this, I acquired seventeen years of experience as a major IT/senior systems engineer, a role that was both analytical and results-oriented. This technical background honed my corporate analytical skills, which I've seamlessly blended with my understanding of systems and human behavior analysis. Coupled with my advanced and refined communication skills, I've been able to deliver solutions that are focused on the needs of my clients.

I feel privileged to note that approximately 95% of my clients are referrals from previous clients, which is a testament to the efficacy of EMDR therapy. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to extend my services to the Texas community and look forward to continuing my journey in this field.

"How much you trust somebody else is a function of how much you trust yourself to be able to handle whatever they do". - Dr. Phil

I am originally from Namibia and South Africa, where I earned my Bachelor of Commerce degree and an Honours degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Pretoria. I also registered as a psychometrician with the South African Medical and Dental Board. My early career, following my academic training in business, was rooted in the technology industry. For over 17 years, I found myself engrossed in the exhilarating world of technology, rising to the position of a Senior Systems Engineer. This chapter of my career led me to relocate to the United States in the early '80s, which granted me a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and the unique challenges faced by immigrants in the United States.

In 1996, my family and I moved from the East Coast to Seattle. It was there that I decided to follow my passion for healthcare. I enrolled in the Master of Arts in Psychology program at Antioch University. During the mandatory one-year internship at Sound Mental Health, I underwent comprehensive training for EMDR therapy provided by the esteemed EMDR Institute. Under supervision, I had the privilege of gaining hands-on experience in dealing with complex trauma in a clinical setting. This prepared me for launching my private practice in 2008. Since then, I've dedicated my efforts to expanding my expertise, and in 2013, I achieved EMDRIA Certification. Most of my work involves serving as a trauma-informed therapist, primarily focusing on helping individuals recover from traumatic experiences, both large and small, which have hampered their ability to function optimally.

In 2021, due to personal circumstances, I relocated to Austin, Texas, where I also acquired my Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) license. I am proud to call Austin my home now.

Beyond my professional life, I take delight in being a mother. I am a licensed private pilot, and loved flying in the PNW from 1999 - 2008. I have a passion for travel and engage in several sports and hobbies including pickleball, hiking, and biking. Moreover, I have a deep appreciation for the arts, particularly enjoying attending the symphony.
